The 4th of May the National Day of Remembrance....
|
|
Silence,
Year after year,
Two endless minutes of silence.
A silence that speaks.
The 4th of May, survivors, relatives and friends all come together for the National Day of Remembrance. To honour those who died, those we lost during the Second World War and in subsequent wars.
On this day it is the survivors of those wars who take pride of place. They tell their stories - not one of them the same as the other. Stories determined by where they lived, their age, their gender, their religion or convictions or simply by coincidence. The chances they were given, the twists of fate and the courage they showed.
55 years, more than half a century since the end of the Second World War, yet still it remains with us through the survivors, the memories, the many memorials and in our search to acquaint ourselves with and recognize history in its fullest sense. War reaches further than just human life. It casts a shadow over the whole of society, over many generations, even in this new century.
War is made by people, but so too is peace and freedom. Again and again people are still prepared to work towards achieving that peace and freedom as in the past others worked to achieve the same goal. And in the same way we today and tomorrow will pass that freedom onto others. We will always be there to offer a haven for those fleeing from war and oppression.
Today we remember but tomorrow and the days after tomorrow we will still remember.
To the victims of war we affirm our allegiance and respect. Their stories make us aware that peace and freedom can never be taken for granted. They must be passed on from generation to generation. Every day we strive to bring that freedom closer: a decent world where every human life counts.
Silence,
Year after year.
Two endless minutes of silence.
A silence that speaks.

W. Kok, may 4th 2000

Queensday in Amsterdam 1
|
|
This is Queensday in the east part of Amsterdam Because the centrum of Amsterdam (where we live) was much tooooooo crowdy
Queensday was the birthday of Queen Juliana (RIP) who died earlier this year and it's kind of a tradition to hang the flag out at Royal birthdays
And if you are wondering why almost everybody wears orange........ One of the last names of our Royal family is 'van Oranje' (translation: From Orange hahaha )
Enjoy
